Is It Time To Replace My Furnace and Air Conditioner?
by Kent Warden
If heating and cooling your home is beginning to take a larger bite out of your monthly budget than you want, or you are concerned that your heating and cooling equipment might not make it through another winter or summer, then it's time to consider an upgrade. While not inexpensive, new equipment can save you a lot of money on your monthly bills. If your equipment is more than a few years old, your air conditioner is most likely at least 30% less efficient than the minimum equipment sold today. Which means if you spent $100 on a monthly cooling bill, it could be reduced by $30. If you have older equipment, your savings could be more dramatic. If you have a 20 or more year old furnace, there is a good potential for savings and increased comfort in the winter months as well. Another option that is increasing in popularity is the Dual Fuel or Hybrid systems. This is where an electric heat pump is installed in conjunction with a gas furnace yielding even greater savings. A heat pump is the only heating device that gives you more heat than you pay for. When it’s 30 degrees or above, the heat pump actually gives you 2-3.5 watts of heat for every watt you buy from the electric company. This is equivalent to an efficiency rating of 200-350%. No gas furnace or electric space heater can achieve this level of efficiency. With discounts on electricity from KCPL, this can greatly reduce monthly heating bills.
